The Ballad of Don Politico

conloco.jpg

Hear it:

Standing in the snow in New Hampshire
Hoping my campaign has a chance
A hat in the ring is the primary thing
You go and hope to hell you do the right dance

Lord it makes me uneasy
You know there’s no guarantee
The way things are polling
They’re gonna nominate me

All we need’s a little momentum
And a cool endorsement or two
But the votes don’t come free
In a democracy
A hundred million bucks before we are through

Lord I know it feels sleazy
It costs to be on TV
But if we keep rolling
They’ll have to nominate me

Flew from Jersey to the Mexican border
Stumping sixteen hours a day
The newspaper said that we’re pulling ahead
But we’ve gotta put this baby away

Lord it’s making me queasy
It’s now as close as can be
If we don’t play hardball
They’ll never nominate me

Saving up conviction for convention day
Dodging every question with a smile
This red line review
Is making me blue
You don’t win party favors
With a soul — no!

Made a lightning trip to Ohio
Texas and Vermont in the bag
The newspaper said that our campaign is dead
Tattoo me with American flags

Lord I know it sounds cheesy
I’m hoping that they will see
If they want a showing
They’ve got to nominate me

Long and winding road to the White House
Hard day’s night for eight days a week
We’ve got to decide on a ticket to ride
The helter skelter don’t bother me

Lord this dog fight ain’t easy
But I just can’t let it be
When we come together
They just might nominate me
I’m the life of the party
They’ve got to nominate me

  1. More clever than the original… I love the Beatle references.

  2. wow, i can’t believe i am going to say this, but that was a more cynical viewpoint than i would be willing to concede. do you not believe that God is involved in the process at all? sometimes i think God gave you guys Bush so that you would finally know what it is you don’t want, ever again. call me a naive fool, but i have more hope than that. obama ain’t jesus or a saviour, but he doesn’t strike me as someone who has sold his soul. or mccain for that matter.

  3. oh, by the way, by “you guys” i mean americans, not republicans. (canadian perspective here.)

  4. I laugh at the lore and pride of man
    At the sophist schools, and the learned clan;
For what are they all, in their high conceit,
When man in the bush with God may meet?
    —Ralph Waldo Emerson

  5. i wish i thought that was a clever rejoinder, but it came across as a convenient and evasive redirect. oh well, that’s your perogative.

  6. Gee, I thought it was kind of neat, what with the “bush” reference and all.

  7. [...] I just saw this picture at totallybaked.wordpress.com: [...]
